Digital shutdown throughout Cologne

For the second time in a row, Telekom is transforming Cologne into the city of the future. As a long-standing service provider and mobility partner of the telecommunications giant, the request is answered as quickly as possible at the headquarters of the agency for global transport.

Digital X: 12 shuttle buses - 4 bus partnerships - 3 locations - 70,000 people.

Deutsche Telekom AG is organizing Digital X in Cologne on 13 and 14 September 2022. 70,000 visitors will be welcomed this year and will have the chance to talk to around 300 speakers about the topic of digitalization. Cologne's city center will be divided into 4 quarters with 15 stages, but localities, stores and pop-up stores will also be rented for the trade fair and will serve visitors as contact points for smaller expert talks and meeting spots for networking. Here, guests could gather valuable ideas, get to know start-ups or listen to success stories, such as those of Jessica Alba, actress and founder of The Honest Company, and Steve "The Woz" Wozniak, co-founder of Apple.

Bus coordination as a service

Sales Manager Janina Winkler is in charge of the project and bus coordination in the cathedral city. The team is complemented by the two trainees, Sevin Algünerhan and Julius Dere. The aim is to train the trainees' understanding of bus coordination as a service.

One day before the start of the trade fair, the bus stops are inspected and final briefings are given to the team and bus drivers. New roadworks, relocated public transport stops or detour can get in the way of bus coordination plans. Checking on public roads is just as much a part of the service as coordinating regular shuttle departures.

Bus coordination for successful trade fair controlling

Discover bus coordination - it covers the entire range of tasks, from planning and route optimization to the actual coordination of buses during transport.

Trade fair day 1 - Start of bus coordination

08:30 a.m.: On the way to Messe Köln, the team discusses today's procedure. Four buses are expected for the shuttle trips across the city to transport visitors comfortably from one stage to the next. Arriving at the bus stop, the two trainees welcome the first bus drivers. Signs with the vehicle's destinations are attached to the bus and the first passengers board the bus.

09:30: The first departures in the direction of Aachener Straße and Hansaring start. At 15-minute intervals, all the vehicles deployed drive to the bus stops and collect the passengers to be transported. In consultation with the coordination team, the optimum route for the buses can be successively worked out in order to transport the guests to their destinations as quickly as possible.

12:00 p.m.: Project manager Janina Winkler ensures that the four buses are running smoothly at the stadium. The buses travel to every stop and now ensure greater flexibility and faster transportation for visitors. The number of visitors has increased and remains high until the last stages and talks.

18:00: After-fair events dominate Cologne's city center and the shuttle bus drivers also treat themselves to a quiet evening after the hustle and bustle.

Trade fair day 2 - Right in the middle of Digital X
09:30 a.m.:
Rain characterizes the morning. The bus drivers and the coordination team meet at an agreed parking lot. A 15-minute interval is quickly established thanks to yesterday's routine.

12:00 p.m.: The drizzle turns into a steady downpour. The trainees are steadfast and continue to ensure that everything runs smoothly and look after the bus drivers taking a break.

4:30 p.m.: Bus capacity begins to decrease as the digitalization fair comes to an end. The last talks on the Inspiration Stage, Future Stage and Disruption Stage take place and attract visitors.

23:00: The last bus leaves the stops. The last departure marks the end of Digital X 2022 for the bus coordination team.

A great trade fair success for everyone involved

Our teams reflect on the past few days and draw an impressive conclusion: the coordination of all shuttles to and within Cologne's vibrant city center went flawlessly and smoothly. "It was my first experience in coordination and I gained countless valuable insights. By gaining an understanding of the coordination process, I understand our internal workflow much better and can coordinate and implement the tasks more precisely. The trade fair also gave me the opportunity to listen to inspiring success stories on the Inspiration Stage. I had never heard of such speaker talks before. Looking back, I now think you can gain a lot of valuable information when well-known speakers share their positive and negative experiences on the road to success," says our dedicated apprentice Julius Dere.
