Why is Good Friday celebrated?

Easter is just around the corner and, like every year, many adventurous travel enthusiasts in Germany will be asking themselves what they can do on this "quiet" holiday. Unlike the usual Easter holidays, Good Friday is under a special star. We explain what makes this holiday so special and give tips on how to organize and plan it. Good Friday is a particularly important day for the Christian community around the world. On Good Friday, Christians commemorate Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for them on this day.

The previous day - Maundy Thursday- is an important Christian holiday. The Last Supper is said to have taken place on this day and serves as inspiration for the celebration of the Lord's Supper. The crucifixion is well known today because the image of Jesus on the cross is often used in churches or as decoration. The crucifix is one of the best-known Christian symbols. The following Sunday, Easter Sunday, is the day on which the resurrection of Jesus is celebrated. Like the weeks before it, Good Friday is considered Lent in Christianity.

In many countries, Good Friday is a silent holiday on which special rituals, church services and processions often take place. It is a time of reflection and prayer.

What is forbidden on Good Friday?

On Good Friday, a public holiday in Germany, special rules and prohibitions apply that reflect the serious nature of this day. One of the most important rules is the ban on gatherings. No public events or festivals are held in order to preserve silence and contemplation. This also includes music and sporting events, which are suspended on this day.

In addition, loud activities and noises are undesirable in many communities. This means that vacuuming, loud music or loud celebrations should be avoided in order to preserve the peace. In some regions of Germany, certain TV programs and films may also not be broadcast on Good Friday, although the rules vary from state to state. In the Catholic states in the south of Germany, the rules are often stricter than in the Protestant states in the north.

Overall, Good Friday is a time for inner reflection, to reflect on the suffering of Jesus Christ and to remember the significance of this day in the Christian faith. It is a time of silence and reflection, which is supported by the aforementioned prohibitions.
