Public local transport (ÖPNV): Municipal utilities and local transport companies offer tariff-secured salaries according to TVöD, which average at 3,520 euros gross monthly . The work includes fixed routes with planned routes and regular working hours. Unions like ver.di actively advocate for improved working conditions.

Private bus companies: Here, the spectrum is particularly broad: long-distance travel buses, excursion trips, class trips, event shuttles or airport transfers. Salaries are often 10-15 percent below the public service but offer more varied assignments and often better room for negotiation of individual conditions.

Factory traffic and employee transportation: Large companies employ their bus drivers for the transport of employees between residential areas and company locations. These positions often offer regulated working hours without weekend and holiday services.

Tourist travels: Multi-day trips with overnight stays require flexibility and a service mentality. Accommodation and meals are provided by the employer, and expense allowances are added. On coffee trips or longer tours, tips are common but not mandatory.

Earning opportunities have improved significantly due to the shortage of skilled workers. After training, the starting salary is between 2,600 and 2,900 euros gross per month. With professional experience, the salary increases continuously: After 3-5 years, bus drivers earn an average of 3,200 euros, and after more than 10 years in the public service, 3,500-3,700 euros is standard.

Regional differences: Salaries vary significantly by federal state. The leader is Baden-Württemberg with an average of 3,997 euros, followed by Hamburg (3,723 euros) and Bavaria (3,612 euros). Additional benefits: In the public sector and with private employers bound by collective agreements, an annual special payment of 75-90 percent of a monthly salary is standard – effectively a 13th monthly salary. Additionally, there are shift allowances (200 euros per month for rotating shift work), surcharges for night, Sunday, and holiday work (25-150 percent), and often a vacation bonus of 400-600 euros.

The profession does not have to be a dead end. Training to become a Trainer enables the training of new bus drivers and increases the salary by 300-500 euros per month. The Qualification as a Transport Supervisor (6-12 months part-time) leads to roles in scheduling and personnel management with salaries of 3,800-4,200 euros. The Master in Road Traffic (IHK qualification, 12-24 months) opens leadership positions as operations managers with earnings up to 4,800 euros.
